Almost all enterprise servers ship with a Baseboard Management Controller (BMC). Many high-end laptops now ship with Intel vPro. Both provide the same fundamental capability: out-of-band access to hardware regardless of OS state. And both share the same fundamental limitation: without intelligent tooling on top, that access sits largely unused.
The question was never “why don’t servers get what laptops get?” Servers have had BMCs and Redfish for years. The question is: why does most of that capability go to waste?

A modern BMC on a Dell, HPE, Lenovo, or Supermicro server exposes a rich set of capabilities through the Redfish API:
- Power control — on, off, graceful shutdown, reset — regardless of OS state
